CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

The Market

Every inch of the town below the castle rolled through Gretchen’s vision as she scanned each face. But when she didn’t find the ones she hoped to, she yanked on the door guard’s sleeve. “Hey. Have you seen Haldir or Eason this morning?”

The end of his spear pointed out toward the gate. “They left with a patrol at first light.”

To the gods who pulled the strings, she rose her eyes to the sky above her and blew out one long breath as her head wagged at their workings. “Oh, man.” One foot at a time, she dropped down each stone step as her witchy cackle clucked from her throat. “I pity the next one of these fools you send after me.”

One hand came to her hip as her other one wagged her finger at the Fates’ cruelness as she followed the worn dirt path to the market. “Cause I’m going to have to make them cry for that one.”

Like the humans’ church bells in the little town she once lived in, a box of junk Gretchen sifted through tingled with each bauble she flipped over.

But when her fingertips grazed the little round piece of metal caked in mud and rust, she was frozen in place. “Oh shit. Was that real?”

The scent of fresh-baked cookies blanketed her before blonde hair appeared in the corner of her eye. “Is what real?”

Like a magnet, the band kept her still. But her eyes gave Hazel a quick look over before she smirked at her gods’ sacrifice to her need for lashing out at someone. “Oh, you poor kid.”

She shook the jewelry free from all the other scraps that covered it and held it up between them. “Touch this.”

“Oh.” All the young healer’s face gathered together as she closed her eyes to the memory playing out in her mind when her fingers hovered over Gretchen’s. “Isn’t that just the sweetest thing you’ve ever seen?”

A grin made her cheeks bunch under her eyes while Hazel nodded quickly. “Yes, Gretchen, it’s real.” One gold coin rested between Hazel’s fingers, and she smiled as she placed it in the vendor’s palm. “We’ll take this. Thank you.”

The edge of her fingernails dug into the dirt encompassing it until Gretchen rubbed it on her pants leg. “How does it do that?”

With her hands clasped behind her, Hazel followed her from the vendor shack. “The ring isn’t alive. Things only record memories.” When a villager bowed his head to them, Hazel dipped her knees and smiled. “You’re the one bringing them back to life.”

A smirk twitched Gretchen’s face as she slid the band down her finger. “I’m not a psychic.”

“Hmm.” The shoulder of her pale pink sweater shrugged as Hazel ducked around a man backing out into the path with a wheelbarrow. “I wouldn’t be so sure.” She bumped Gretchen’s arm with her elbow. “Your auntie is quite a powerful one, and I doubt you fell far from her particular tree.”

An apple popped free of a cart full, and Gretchen grabbed it before it hit the ground and wiped it off on her belly.
